What’s the ice conditions like these days?

I lived on explosion lake for 6 years 2003 to 2009. I love the area I love the people. The problem I ran into in 2008 was I hadn’t considered my health at 55. September Labor Day out on A boat having fun fish and swimming I guess I didn’t drink enough water and I was warm enough that ended up with heat stroke. We got back on shore and slightly dizzy. I figured I’d take the long trip to the gas station in Lakewood. I got some sandwiches. After getting the sandwiches started driving home. Lost all my bearings and drove till I found a familiar sign on beaver dam road and girlfriend had to give directions home. Got home got out of truck and passed out on gravel driveway. Neighbors helped me up and put me in chair waiting for rescue squad. Got me to hospital 2 hours later and woke up in morning with tubes plugged into me at hospital.
I realized being single and alone for most part couldn’t live up there anymore.
The Wisconsin winters had taken their toll on me.
The original thought was to move to Miami. I had business connections there, but opted for Texas instead. Figured it didn’t get cold there. I was wrong. Ended up in North Texas 25 miles from Oklahoma border. The weather here has variables from 0 to 120 degrees! The type of soil here with the weather fluctuations does not allow basements!
This is bad because we get lots of tornadoes. Kind of like the Townsend area. I have been in Texas since October 5, 2009. 8″ of snow in 2011 when Dallas hosted packers for super bowl and I know Packers brought the weather lol! These idiots can’t drive in snow! Their attitude is speed on ice if you have 4 whl drive! Sheesh!
Except for the Winters I really miss living there but the reality was I really needed to be close for medical care. It’s really nice to see a camera from where I spent 6 years of my life. (Actually much longer going to Piels for most of my young life. In fact my dad was going to buy the place from Alice Pile in the 60s but don’t know what happened to the deal.
Thanks a lot for the view brings back great memories.
God Bless

How thick is the ice??

Reply

Greg January 12, 2021 at 12:01 pm

Don’t know of a recent measurement but should be safe for foot, ATV and snowmobile traffic. I’ve seen vehicles on the ice at the boat landing

Reply

Chris January 21, 2021 at 6:33 am

Nearby on Bear Lake I was told around 8-9 inches. But with upcoming weather I expect to see that increase. 🙂

Greg,
Just a quick note of appreciation for you making your webcam available to the public. We purchased a cabin about halfway between Mountain and Lakewood on Sulivan Springs Rd in 2019. This is the first year we have been able to use it in the winter. Being able to see the snow conditions has taken the guesswork out of it. Thank you.

Hello Jim, thank you for your comment. We are glad your find our site helpful. We need more snow!

Hello, just wondering how ice thickness is looking? Wondering if I can bring my ATV or if I’ll be walking! Any info would be appreciated, thank you!

Reply

Chris Hansen January 1, 2020 at 9:54 am

Two weekends ago it was 10” on Bear Lake. Last weekend it was 6” on Bear. Incredibly unstable ice build this year. Be careful going on ice.

Keith Flynn January 1, 2020 at 1:18 pm

Thank you Chris Hansen, I greatly appreciate the response! Any future updates within the next few weeks would be awesome! I’ve been winter fishing Wheeler for years, grew up in Suring, WI., but now live in Green Bay so I like using this page to check in as it is a long ride to check conditions! Thanks again, Keith Flynn

No problem. I don’t live up there but we have cabin at Bear Lake. I would say this, last weekend on Bear, it was raining with multiple areas of open water. Then it snowed again. Local lakes are just not getting solid ice making weather thus far. I was standing on the ice near shore last weekend. I heard a big thud and I was surrounded by a massive crack. I wasn’t worried but top layer was impacted. 🙂

I left Townsend 10 years ago from my place on explosion lake and moved to Dallas. Had a wonderful place there, but after the divorce, aging and the cold and snow, had to leave.
I miss the snowmobiling, ice fishing right outside the house, but just go to old to be there year around alone.

Not to say the weather is that great here with 20 degree nights, but 70 degree days ain’t too bad..

I miss all you great folks up there. Enjoy. Someone catches a monster walleye, please send me a photo.
I remember the summer of 2010 on the lakes down here, something I never saw there. Cotton mouth snakes swimming in the friggen lake!
I never thought I would say it, but I miss the noise the lions made at 3 am lol.
I saw the site and thought I would just send a note to yall.

How much snow is on the ice. Is it driveable with 4 wheel drive. Are there any roads plowed on ice?

Reply

Chris February 14, 2019 at 8:19 pm

I drove snowmobile on wheeler on the 9th. This is before the last round of snow. It was deep to say the least. There was a truck on the ice. Now I imagine it would be challenging. This last round of snow may have made it too deep with 4wd.

Reply

Rick MEIXL February 25, 2019 at 12:16 pm

I was out for the fishing jamboree last week end and had to walk out and snow was wast high and
slush under that. our snowmobile got stuck several times .. No roads were plowed at that time and I
don’t think a plow could plow all that snow.

Hello, I see you posted about the ice thickness on Wheeler, how does it look? Would the whole lake be atv ready you think. I’m from Green Bay but I spend my winter on this lake and am looking forward to getting back up there asap! Thanks for your time

We were out fishing and riding on the lake this weekend. Seems to be 7-8 inches of ice where we were between the islands. Plenty of other ATVs on the ice as well. But still fairly early, use caution.

Keith Flynn December 11, 2018 at 8:59 am

How is the ice so far? ATV ready yet?

Was on bear lake this past weekend. 14″ consistent ice depth. Should be similar on Wheeler if I were to guess

The top picture looks like it could have been taken from what was once my Grandma’s property. Between the boat ramp and the point. Had a huge round bolder at waters edge right side of property. Just found this group.

Is the lake cleared out yet? Hopefully coming up in two weeks to put everything in.

Reply

Greg April 12, 2016 at 7:03 am

Ice is still there. This recent cold weather has definitely slowed things down. Weather this week is supposed to warm substantially so it may be gone in two weeks. Hoping to have the lake webcams running again next weekend.

The ice is pretty thin now. Looks like there are open spots just outside of our bay this morning. Won’t be long now.

Absolutely beautiful on the lake today, beautiful sunset! I walked down to the lake after the game and there are no weeds off the end of the dock. Wish it would stay that way:(

wheelerlake July 24, 2012 at 8:25 pm

I saw it more towards Orlando’s old place the last time we were up. I wish they would move ours, it’s right in our view:( It doesn’t stop people from coming all the way in anyway, they still motor right on through the area. I wish they would mark the rocks back by us instead. Very surprised more people haven’t hit them, not realizing they’re there. We have to dodge the other pile to get in and out, too and they sneak up on you:)

Does anybody know where the new Milfoil buoy at the mouth of the south bay went? It was there last weekend but not today.

I’ve tried to post to the website a couple of times and it won’t show up anywhere. I noticed no one else posting anything…what am I doing wrong???

Reply

Greg July 19, 2012 at 10:43 am

You aren’t doing anything wrong. I have recently discovered a problem with the forum software. Unfortunately the software was previously free to use but they are now charging for it. This has forced me to do some research to see if there are better alternatives available before I commit to throwing money at the current forum software.

Hello Greg,

A friend of mine turned me on to your site. Love it! I used to own a cabin right across from the public beach, and my grandparents (Frank/Helen Kole or kowalkowski) had a place down the road since before I was born. You are not the son of Peggy and Gene are you?

Hello Larry, those are not my parents. My Dad’s name was Guy. He and my mother bought our place in 1957 and I bought it from him about 20 years ago.

Spent the better half of my youth just waiting to go up-north to Wheeler lake. Had a cottage on the east shore drive. Summers and weekends were at the lake. I can still visualize the Red Owl in Lakewood where my grandfater was the butcher. All the family friends. Us kids running around the lake. My aunt and uncles A&W in town, ice cream. Those were the days.

Reply

wheelerlake December 6, 2011 at 9:27 am

It looks like the lake is completely frozen over from our vantage point in the northwest corner. It also looks like there’s deer or turkey tracks across our bay in front of our dock already. Unfortunately there’s snow on top of the ice so it probably won’t be clear. A few years ago we skated across the lake at Christmas time and could see all the cracks and how deep the ice was, rocks, logs, etc. So cool! Ice fishermen-just BE SAFE!! No fish is worth your life.
